This project required us to create an art piece that incorporated weaving techniques that we studied. I worked with my classmate Gwendolyn on this project and we created a pet swing sofa for hamsters.

Features of Weave:
Instead of a traditional criss cross weave, we tried using a U-shaped curl of the wire, alternating it to interlock the rattan together. This allowed the sofa to have a stronger form with different textures and colours to it. We used a stick and strand technique where the metal wire acted as the stronger ‘stick’ and the rattan works as the strand. The black fabric was woven into the sofa after to give it more colour and pattern.
For the pillow, we tried using a plain weave, knotting it at the end. We added foam into the yarn to give height and volume to the pillow.
Strengths: We added black fabric to give the sofa a pattern to make it look different from traditional weaving where there’s usually only one material and colour.
Weakness: The metal wire was not easy to bend, thus it was not very even and didn’t hold the rattan in place well. We had to hot glue it to make the structure stronger.
