Untitled 2

Untitled 2 required us to create a 30 seconds aural sensation, accompanied by an image to convey meaning through sound and visual stimuli.

For this piece, I’ve decided to focus on perspectives. In life, I feel that a lot of opinions and feelings are just a matter of perspectives. What you see and feel towards a certain subject might not be how it’s experienced by others. This aural piece was inspired by my own personal experience. Recently, I started shunning a certain person as that person has offended me multiple times. I decided that I do not need to have to interact with this person unless necessary. This person figured that I didn’t like him and came up to apologise to me for his actions. I felt touched by his sincerity and I started looking at him in a different light.

I chose to capture this particular image as I was inspired by Rene Magritte’s mirror artwork. I think that mirror often depicts reality, but in a “mirror-image”. It’s somewhat trippy to think that the perspective and what we see in the mirror, is actually just a reflection and a facade. I thought that by reflecting the same image and focussing my eye contact with the camera, it gives a warped perspective of the mirror.

There are 2 images in the piece. Both depicts me holding the same word in different outfits. In the first image, I’m dressed up, feeling great. However, I’m not smiling showing that even though it seems as though I should be feeling happy as I’m dressed up, I’m actually putting on a facade. In the next image, I’m dressed comfortably. My hair is a mess as if I just woke up. The image depicts me in my natural unglamorous state and I usually hate being shown that way. However, I have a wide smile on my face showing my happiness, albeit my unkemptness.

I chose the word cacophony as the word itself is a very harsh, distorted sound. However, I like the fact it shares the same ending as the word symphony, which is the opposite of what cacophony means. Cacophony means a harsh discordance of noise while symphony is an orchestral musical composition. Both have the opposite meanings yet shares a similar ring to their pronunciation and I find that beautiful. Thus, I created the word cacophony with 2 different fonts. Caco being written in a hard, edgy, rigid font, symbolising the dislike towards the subject. Phony being written in a cursive pretty italics font, symbolising that the perspective could change and the person could start liking the subject.

For the audio, I chose sounds that annoys me in particular. The sounds I chose are chewing loudly, creaking of chairs, squawking of birds, and cicadas in the jungle. These sounds are what I’ve experienced in my life and particularly annoys me. I chose to put these sounds together and it created a harmony, making the audio sound organic and natural, as if it belongs in nature itself. This depicts once again how perspective can change towards a certain subject.

In my audio, there is a constant build up towards the ending. I repeated the audio of the chair creaking to give a sense of layering, for it to build up to a climax. At the end, the chair finally creak and the audio ends.

Signifier:

Tardy Appearance, without smile – Appears happy on the outside, sad on the inside

Unkempt appearance with smile – Appears sad on the outside, happy on the inside

Choice of sounds – Things that I do not like

Audio piece – Giving new perspective to the things that I do not like, and starting to appreciate it.

Cacophony – Symbolising I can shift my perspective and like the things that I use to hate.

Difference in font – Caco being harsh, depicts with a rigid, edgy font. Phony being a beautiful sound, depicted with a beautiful cursive font.
