Curiosity and Tradition

3. Creative Project

Consider the two words “CURIOSITY” and “TRADITION”. How would you approach and interpret them together as themes and/or concepts?

Please choose ONE of the following formats for this creative project:

  1. Create a video/film or animation [that lasts no longer than 1 minute] about CURIOSITY and TRADITION.

  2. Create 5-10 photographic images about CURIOSITY and TRADITION.

  3. Create a media piece [sound, interactive, or other] [that lasts no longer than 1 minute] about CURIOSITY and TRADITION.

  4. Create a 3D object or space about CURIOSITY and TRADITION and submit 5 images [documentation or renderings].

This was the project brief for the submission that year. I did some ideation and decided to create a piece based on curiosity kills the cat. The idea was that tradition was a ritual or an action that is passed down to be continued. Be it the old traditional ways, or a new ideologies, curiosity would be the defining factor of the outcome. In this piece, I decided to create a wooden stage, with changeable backgrounds. I painted 3 ceramic cats that fits the different scenarios. These cats were curious beings living in different eras, and their actions would lead to their final outcome, death.

This piece was really fun to do and my first experience creating a physical art piece. During the portfolio review with Prof Peer, I was very nervous and in fact I dropped one of the ceramic cats that I spent the night painting in front of him. I was very crestfallen as I broke my art piece and had to create a new one, but I still manage to enter the school anyways so all is well.
